Warehouse racks must be inspected regularly to ensure safety, involving both internal (by the company itself) and external inspections (by a recognised inspector). These obligations are laid down in the Codex on well-being at work and the NBN EN 15635 standard imposed by Europe. Regular documentation and follow-up inspections are crucial for meeting legal requirements and ensuring a safe working environment.
An inspection is required before the use of any newly installed racking system. This must be done before any goods are placed on the racks. In addition to this initial inspection, it is necessary—and mandatory—to conduct at least an annual re-inspection. A racking system in use is at a real risk of damage due to frequent loading and unloading, collisions with rolling equipment, and so on. Prevention is better than cure, as the consequences of a damaged racking system can be significant. Therefore, periodic inspections are essential. Finally, a re-inspection is also required whenever there is a change in the configuration of an existing racking system.
Yes, work can continue without any problems. Our inspectors work alone and do not need explanations when carrying out the inspection.
An inspection is always valid for one year, provided that there are no changes in the usage or configuration of the racking system.
There are a number of things you can do yourself to make an inspection run smoothly. We made a list of items you can tick off during any internal inspection. You can download the list here. Our inspectors work alone during the inspection and inform you immediately in case urgent repairs are needed. You will receive a detailed report a few days after the inspection. More information on the procedure can be found here.
No. An inspection is not required by insurance companies, but it is highly recommended. A regular inspection minimises the risk of accidents. As a result, you will not only pay a lower premium; it also gives you proof that, as a business owner, you have done everything possible to ensure the safety of your employees and warehouse. See more arguments why an inspection is necessary here.
During each inspection, the capacity of all your warehouse racks is determined. It is required by law to clearly and correctly indicate this load capacity on the racking system itself. As a professional inspection company, SESS can prepare these loading signs for you.
If our inspectors find too many defects or issues that cause your rack to not comply with European regulations, it will be rejected. Problems that pose a serious safety risk are reported on the same day. The inspection report will clearly describe the issues, including their location and the timeline within which repairs should be made. In many cases, you can continue working while waiting for the repairs. After all repairs have been made, our inspector can come by again for a final inspection.
Within a few business days after the inspection, we will provide you with the inspection report of your warehouse. If any issues are discovered that pose a serious safety risk (red label), we will inform you on the day of the inspection itself so that you can take immediate action.
